If you aren’t familiar with the incredible Ava DuVernay, you have some serious catching up to do. The fabulous Ms Ava DuVernay is an award-winning African American director, writer, and producer. Her resume is extensive and impressive – from Selma, to Queen Sugar, to a Wrinkle In Time – DuVernay continues to deliver and provide opportunity for African American culture to not only be seen but felt everywhere around the world.

She was the first African American woman to win the best director prize at the Sundance Film Festival for her work directing Selma. She is also the first African American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for 13th, another incredible must-see Netflix documentary brought to you by then and only.Did I mention she was the first African American female director to be nominated for a Golden Globe?Ava is a lot of “first” in the film industry; she continues to exceed expectations and continuously represents for people of color.

When They See Us, is heart wrenching and beyond necessary to watch. In the modern times of racism and hate; the story of The Central Park Five is one that needed to be told. The depiction of this true story is hard to watch –  it is infuriating and heartbreaking. I won’t dive into this series here – but I have plenty to say. Most importantly I wanted give a round of applause to Ava DuVernay – THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING TO DELIVER AND CREATING SPACE FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR. You are staple to the African American Culture – your thought provoking storytelling is beyond appreciated.
